Naturally a highly mobile audience called for a Responsive Design approach for the website, with page layouts that automatically adapting to match the viewing device. Rather than limiting mobile visitors to a sub-set of site’s content and functionality, we gave careful consideration to making sure that everything would be equally accessible across desktop, tablet, smartphone and anything in between.

The opportunity to work on the design of the maps in the more recent releases of their mobile apps was a particularly interesting challenge.

Creating a design style that would feel instantly familiar to both existing users and those coming over from other services required some significant research into the common conventions of aviation mapping. We knew that we needed a style that was simple enough to work well on small devices but was still capable of conveying the complexity required – for example there are more than 20 different types of airport to represent in icon form.

We were also introducing a new night mode. Here testing with real devices in a darkened room to help simulate nigh-time flying conditions was invaluable in arriving at a colour scheme and overall brightness that would help keep user interface elements clear, whilst minimising screen glare.
